What to do in Nuquí, Chocó

Nuquí is one of Colombia’s most biodiverse destinations. In this corner of the Colombian Pacific, the jungle meets the ocean — creating a setting unlike anywhere else for experiences like humpback whale watching, hikes through tropical rainforest, crystal-clear rivers, and encounters with local communities.

Unlike other tourist destinations, there are no crowds and no mass tourism here. Every experience happens in an authentic environment where untouched nature sets the pace.

From Jenené Lodge, you have direct access to all of these — while staying right at the edge of the sea where the jungle begins.

Whale watching in Nuquí

Between July and October, humpback whales arrive in the Colombian Pacific to breed and give birth. Seeing them in their natural habitat, minutes from the coast, is one of the most powerful experiences in Colombia.

Hikes through tropical rainforest

Walk trails surrounded by biodiversity, hidden rivers, and wildlife found nowhere else — inside one of the wettest and most alive jungles on the planet.

Waterfalls and natural rivers

Discover hidden waterfalls deep in the jungle and swim in crystal-clear water far from any noise. The kind of place that doesn't appear on maps.

Kayak en el Pacífico

Explore the coast by kayak and feel what it means to move at the rhythm of the Colombian Pacific Ocean. Open water, mangroves, and a coastline that looks unchanged for centuries.

Artisanal fishing

Spend time with local communities and experience traditional Pacific fishing firsthand — not as a tourist activity, but as a window into how people here have lived for generations.

Visit local villages

Take a boat to communities like Joví or Termales and connect with their culture, food, and way of life. The Chocó has an Afro-Colombian identity entirely its own — and it's not performed for visitors.

Surf in Nuquí

Consistent Pacific swells reaching a coastline with almost no one waiting for them. Nuquí offers waves for intermediate and experienced surfers looking for something far off the beaten path — no crowds, no surf schools, just ocean.

Experience Nuquí as a feeling, not just a destination

In Nuquí it’s not about checking places off a list — it’s about living each moment in connection with nature.

From whale watching to jungle hikes, every experience happens in an intact and authentic environment, far from mass tourism.

At Jenené Lodge, every activity is designed to make the most of your trip — with local guides and real experiences.

What's the best time to visit Nuquí?

It depends on what you want to live. From July to October it’s humpback whale season — the destination’s most iconic moment.

But Nuquí can be visited year-round, because every month offers something different. Between January and March, drier weather brings good sun and strong waves for surfing. In February, the rare phenomenon of bioluminescence lights up the ocean at night. In April and May, whale sharks appear alongside massive sardine balls.

June is ideal for fishing. And throughout the rest of the year, the jungle and sea keep delivering — turtle releases, bird watching, and a rhythm that never really stops.

Here, more than choosing a perfect date, it’s about choosing an unforgettable experience.
